Who says you have to wait until Spring for fresh, healthy-looking hair? Let’s face it, for most of us, our hair and scalp will be exposed to several more weeks of winter weather, and that means they need some regular TLC to stay looking and feeling fabulous. Incorporate these 7 easy tips into your daily and weekly care regime and everyone will think your hair spent the winter down south.
1. Avoid Hot Water
Wash your hair in lukewarm water. Hot water, as wonderful as it may feel this time of year, dehydrates the hair and scalp, and strips them of their natural oils. Rinse in cool water to seal the cuticle and create shine.
2. Don’t Over-Wash
Try not to over-wash hair as this can also strip the natural oils. The best way to wash your hair is to alternate these three methods daily or every second day, to maintain natural shine and lustre:
Day 1: Traditional method: Shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse, towel dry* (*squeeze excess moisture out of hair instead of rubbing with towel, which can damage hair).
Day 2: Conditioner method: Rinse hair and add conditioner, leave in while you tend to the rest of your body, rinse, towel dry and proceed to styling.
Day 3: Reverse-washing method: Rinse hair, apply conditioner, do not rinse and apply shampoo directly onto hair, lather and rinse. This will help by creating a barrier on hair so that you are not over-shampooing.
3. Moisturize & Mask
Moisturizing prevents dandruff and hair fall caused by a dry scalp, and hair masks restore shine and bounce. To prevent dandruff and hair fall caused by a dry scalp, use a product like Redken’s Diamond Oil Dry Scrub prior to shampooing once per week, and moisturize your hair weekly with a mask recommended by your stylist.

4. Deep Condition
In winter, use a deep conditioner and/or a leave-in conditioner. This will help combat frizz caused by static electricity.

5. Keep it Cool
Don’t over-dry your hair with a blow dryer. While air drying is best, going outside with wet hair is not a healthy option for you or for your hair (it can freeze and break). A good drying regime starts with a leave-in conditioner, followed by a layering of heat-protective products, with the blow dryer ideally set to a cooler setting.

7. Eat Well & Hydrate
As always, great skin and hair starts with a healthy, balanced diet and good hydration. So eat up those fruits and veggies and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
